Wahoo, King Fish, and a Sunday Lime

frigate birds nesting in trees on a tiny island in the grand bocas trinidadMayaro treated us very well, but hearing about a 70lb kingfish breaking a wire leader sent us packing back to Chagaramas where, once again, we hooked up with Gaff for some more fishing in the bocas off the northeastern coast of Trinidad.  We pulled out early enough to catch a sunrise, but it was going to be an overcast day to sea. It would take more then a little overcast day to diminish the beauty of the bocas! The rains have been strange this year and as a result everything is in full bloom in the bocas — and lucky for us the fish were around as well!
It was a cool morning by Trinni standards, cool enough to keep a t-shirt on anyway, and a greying sky threatened rained, but we reached our spot with a nice spread and it wasn’t more then an hour before the back of The Barbie Doll lit up with life as line screamed from one of the outrigers “Fish! Fish On!” was repeated as the scramble began. A good fight later a beautiful (in the i’m missing half my tail beautiful), wahoo was by the boat. Lit up and bright neon green and blue, a stark and pretty contrast to the dark and sometimes black waters of Trinidad, our friend Jiggy found his mark with the gaff and heaved our future dinner on board. High 5′s around — we had fish in the boat, but we were still hungry!
The day strolled on, the weather remained consistantly dreary, but that hardly put a damper on the boat. Things we’re quiet for a wahoo and king fish caught a day of fishing on the barbie doll in trinidad couple hours, the fish we’re getting their morning coffee it seemed. The scenery and beer made the time pass a little more quickly. While enjoying a round of Stag, one of the local Trinni libations, we heard the sweet music of another smoking line, this time the down-rigger took off in a torrent. It was the beginning of King fish season this would be our first king fish of the day. After a smoking run we had the fish aboard, played paparatzi, and had him in the cooler ready for more.
As luck would have it we’d get just that. 2 good sized king fish, and a wahoo filled the ice chest and there were smiles around. Not a bad way to spend a morning! We called it an early day and decided to go down and tie-up with some other friends in Scotland Bay for a bit of a BBQ & Lime. On the menu: Garlic & Herb BBQ Wahoo Taco’s. With some amazing garlic sauce. A privy preview to a new, and quite delicious product coming soon to internet stores/shelfs. That’s an AA Sunday!
