San Jose isn’t you average million person city, but it isn’t without its charms. Hidden beneath a budding economy there is
some old architecture, and obscure art that adorn parks throughout the city, and every night there is a party, game, or other engaging festivity to keep you well occupied, but unfortunately there isn’t much in the way of fishing! After meeting up with some great anglers; Gaff, Porsche, and Ken we took our leave from the concrete jungle’s of San jose to some greener pastures a few hours away, La Fortuna, Costa Rica — Home of Volcano and Lake Arenal!
The scenic drive lasted a few hours, but combined with a few hairs of the dog to go around before we knew it we had arrived in La Fortuna, our home for the next couple of days. A relaxing stay at The Volcano Lodge with some bass fishing out on the volcanic lake, Lake Arenal and hopefully some delicious rainbow bass for the dinner table!
The Volcano Lodge was great, with friendly staff and a great buffet breakfast in the morning, but it was the view from their grounds that took the cake, The volcano stands tall amongst the vibrant green background of the eastern side of the ridge. Most of the year the peak of Arenal is obscured by clouds, but it seemed Costa Rica was going to be nice to us this trip as our view was nearly always clear for the days we’d be there, A item for the bucket list!
As should be the fishing! Lake Arenal boasts some large specimens of guapote (rainbow bass), Machaka, Tiger Bass,
Blue-gills, and apparently clams! Porsche would be the first person that one of our captains, Tercio, had seen catch a clam in his 25 years of fishing on the lake (part of the video below)! Both boats, the other manned by a good captain and friend to Addictive Angler, Captain Ron, had a good day! In total we caught plenty of fish to occupy the middle of the table which is a satisfying ending to any good fishing trip!
Lake Arenal and La fortuna treated us extremely well a big thank you to our captain friends on the lake Cpt. Ron and Cpt. Tercio, La Perla’s in La fortuna for cooking up an exquisite meal for us, and The volcano lodge for accommodating some party animal fisherman, Sweet asses for all!
Enjoy the video featuring everyone getting in on a little Addictive Angling action — One tasty day after The Volcano guapote Hunt!
