Fishing Reports
Every Day is Different, White Sea Bass Day!
Some mornings when you go out fishing, there is something almost palpable in the air, everything feels alive, maybe its the day or the
pre-fishing beer toast, but whatever the catalyst these days seem rife with action. It just so happened to be one of those days as the apparently mild rainy season was going to continue to produce great conditions. As the sun crested over Golfito Dulce bathing everything in a warm morning light the bait were visible all around the bay in perfectly still waters.
By the 7 am, low tide, we’d made our way to Pavonas Beach. Pavonas is a popular surf destination as it boasts one of the worlds longest breaks, the rocks around Pavonas also house some nice fish it would seem! Free-spooling sardines we soon found ourselves in nearly constant double and triple hook ups with Roosters, Snappers, but mostly Corvina (Or White Sea Bass). It was one after a
nother, until we decided to give them a break and go find some other prey because as our captain for the day Lindor Jr. put it, “We’re not eating chicken tonight!” We certainly weren’t, and we’d run out of sardines so it was on to different waters
The rest of the day was a lot of catch and release as the crystal clear waters of the southern pacific Costa Rican coast served up fish after fish. The Osa peninsula really makes you feel like your in Jurassic Park’s backyard — And its actually not far off as parts of the movie were filmed just 60 miles out in the Pacific around Isle De Coco. The ride home brought us face to face with a rather ominous looking storm, but a good soaking and a bit of run around later and we were back safe and warm in Golfito.
Fast Forward to the next day — Katie, the owner of our perfectly situated condo just above Banana Bay Marina in Golfito was kind enough to let us throw a little pot luck fish fry complete with tray after tray of freshly cooked white sea bass! Add a few bottles of your favorite liquor, good company, and some excellent side dishes and you had quite the recipe for a great party and a good topping on the cake to an excellent day of fishing! Thanks Katie, and Thanks Lindor and Mauricio!

One Last Fishing Trip and The Road South
Day 2 of fishing out of “El Coco” was another rain soaked morning followed by some beautiful weather and always beautiful sites. The green of the rainy season was in full effect as every bit of land above the water was covered in various shades of green creating some rather pretty backdrops for fishing. As we motored past witch’s rock (Rocke de Bruja) the sun slowly began to peak around the mornings rain clouds giving way for some nice site seeing: turtles, whales, dolphin, and rays were out playing in the azure waters of the mid pacific.
The catch for the day was 3 horse-eyed jacks, 1 wahoo, 1 large rock snapper, 2 roosters, and 2 rainbow runners. All were caught casting/jigging with the exception of the wahoo which came from no where and took a live bait on a free-spool. The table fare was delicious, we had a few restaurants around town cook up the various species for us: Big
thanks to Mar de Coco & La Rotisserie! So with some full bellies and a sore set of arms we fled from the next storm and Took a road trip south after hearing some good fish stories were in the making, the bite was on!
If you ever get the opportunity to take a Costa Rican road trip, its well worth the time, the scenery is stunning and there are some very interesting sites to behold along the way — watch out for the T-Rex. It looked like we weren’t going to get away from the storm Quepos, Manuel Antonio, and Dominical were all plagued with huge swells and pounding rain that didn’t look to be letting up anytime soon so we made our way even further south to Golfito, where we decided to put a tent up for a while after hearing about some of the recent fishing reports.
